Originally initiated by artist Bronwen Lace out of a need to work within a community of artists. She had had solo studio space for over 2 years and she felt somewhat isolated and alone. The first iteration of the collective studio opened in 2014, just down the road from August House, at 7 Sivewright Avenue in New Doornfontein. By reaching out to her networks, she filled the large space she had rented with artists Rhett Martyn, Andrew Kayser, Jake Singer and Alastair Mclachlan. She moved the community into August House in 2016. She continued to run and manage the space as an artist until she left South Africa to live in Austria in mid-2019. The space continues to function as a shared artists community.
End Street Studios has 8 studio spaces and is open to artists at varying stages in their careers. As the space evolved there was a need to create programming for the studio as a whole. The studio works together with the META foundation to host a number of awards and residency programmes, crits sessions which enable critical conversations for the artists and their work, opportunties to exhibit, a residency and awards programme.
