‘3 Solos’ opening soon at Johann van Heerden Art Gallery in Pretoria East, on the 3rd of March. @ayolagoxo

On the 1st and 2nd of March, we present SPIRIT CAP

On the 1st and 2nd of March, we present SPIRIT CAPITAL at the Joburg Market Theatre, a performance by Roland Gunst_John K Cobra in co-production with Moussem, choreographed by Moya Michael, and performed by Doris Bokongo Nkumu and Nathalie Bokongo Nkumu. SPIRIT CAPITAL refers to an object from the Congolese Luba tradition: a wooden headrest, usually with two identical female figures at its base. These objects serve as ‘a site of memory’, or spirit and history containers. SPIRIT CAPITAL transforms the stage into a ritualized place and invites viewers on a spatial and mental journey through movements, words, sounds, music, and changes to their appearance. On the 2nd of March, the performance will be preceded by a discursive event where SPIRIT CAPITAL is used as a prompt to discuss the psychology of space, the manifestation of history, possible contemporary understandings of identity, and the performativity of memory within a South African context. With Dr. Nosipho Mngomezulu, Dr. Heeten Bhagat, Gilbert Balinda, Slindile Mthembu, Roland Gunst, and Samara Ragaven More info and tickets are in the bio. The META foundation (@meta.foundation ), in partnership with the End Street Studios (@endstreetstudios ) and August House, is excited to announce the winner of the 2024 Female Artist Studio Exchange: Samantha Maseko (@impumelelo_m ) Samantha Mpumelelo Maseko is a contemporary artist currently based in Johannesburg. In 2020, she successfully completed a transformative three-year Printmaking course at Artist Proof Studio, shaping her artistic journey. Maseko's work serves as a poignant exploration of black femininity and identity, weaving together narratives through various mediums. Her artistic arsenal includes the evocative strokes of oil painting, the intricate details of print media, the dynamic fusion of collage, and the textured layers of mixed media. Samantha will join @endstreetstudios at August House for a year, starting on the 19th of February 2024.
