Lungisa Madywabe’s (b 1997, South Africa. Lives and works in Johannebsurg) artistic journey began at the Market Photo Workshop. She completed her Beginner and Intermediate Courses in Photography and graduated in 2017. She then went on to study for her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Rhodes University, graduating in 2021. Lungisa Madywabe is a multidisciplinary artist. She combines video, sound, photography, collage, and printmaking to create complex and uncomfortable multimedia experiences. Her work interrogates traditional ideas around gender and sexuality. Her work subtly comments on notions of democracy, the rainbow nation narrative, patriarchy, and what it means to belong. Her printmaking artworks are colourful and playful. However, they are laced with ironic humour.
